Chikumagawa Wine Valley

Nagano’s up-and-coming, largest region spreads from the upper to lower basins of the Chikumagawa Wine valley, including the Nagano,Ueda and Saku basins. In this region, vineyards of European grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir are expanding very rapidly because of the good viticultural conditions. Many wineries have been established here for years. In the lower part of the valley, most vineyards are located on the alluvial fan offering good drainage. The varieties grown here are different depending on the altitude. Some of the wines made from grapes of this region have won awards at international wine competitions.
